Burberry Prorsum Resort 2014

Christopher Bailey’s central idea, according to the word sent down, was “the girl next door.” the tight, stretchy, below-the-knee pencil skirt. It’s a style reference that hovers around the late eighties or early nineties, but Bailey has gone one better in this collection, wiping out the retro feel by using luxe stretch lace. That obviously involves a lot of transparency and visible underwear. Rest assured there will be girls who dare to parade this look as seen—but rest equally assured that linings will certainly be available at the delivery stage.

Accessory-wise? There’s the white, wedge, peep-toe bootie that also triggers nineties memories (for those with memories long enough), and the new crusher-pouch clutch: simple, tactile, and, available in many colors and textures, highly likely to prove a long-term hit. Finally, though, the surprise: For a company mostly thought of as an outerwear and handbag label, the eveningwear in this resort collection is the standout. The dresses with cutout backs bisected by asymmetrical straps are stunning and would stand up in any runway show. Perhaps this time next year, Burberry might think about it?
