Are 'Meggings' About To Go Mainstream?

Leggings have already appeared on male catwalk models and fearless rock stars. But now a new fashion label hopes to take the unlikely trend for 'meggings' mainstream.

Chicago-based Adam Freck and Andrew Volk launched Meggings Man Clothing in December and say their bold tight-fitting pants for men have been a hit with customers. There are currently 14 different styles in the collection - including metallic finishes and camouflage print - in sizes M to XL, priced from $29.95 (#4,800).

Entrepreneurs Mr Freck and Mr Volk saysmeggings enhance mens' best features. 'The truth of the matter is, spandex is flattering. It compliments people well . . . Meggings are much more comfortable than super tight jeans, and more stylish and appropriate to wear out in public than fitted athletic pants.'

They continued: 'With meggings, people ask about their crotch all the time. The response that we get a lot, once people try on our meggings, is, "That's not as in-my-face as I thought it would be." Once guys actually try meggings on, the fear goes away.' Unlike traditional leggings, which are typically worn by women, meggings were designed with the male body in mind.

They have inverted triangle panels on the hips, wide waist bands and a faux zip in the front. Mr Freck and Mr Volk say they have had a steady flow of orders and are optimistic about the future success of their business. However, not everyone is so enthusiastic about the style. 'Men want to wear them, and that's a fact! There are always naysayers with any new piece of fashion' 'Only acceptable if you're a pro wrestler,' one commentator wrote after hearing about the launch of the fashion label. And one woman added: 'Sorry but I just don't think I can take a man wearing leggins seriously. Just not going to happen.

' Meggings Man Clothing suggests pairing 'meggings' with T-shirts, tank tops, jackets and hoodies, along with heavy boots or sneakers. 'We also see a lot of our customers layering with their meggings: under shorts, or even wearing two pairs of different colors and pushing up the legs of the top layer,' the company said.

Talk of meggings being fashion's next big thing popped up in December 2012. They were spotted all over New York, and celebrities like Justin Bieber and Russell Brand were seen rocking some man-leggings. Back then, GQ took a stand on the meggings movement: 'No. 'Yet stretchy pants for the male population may be making their way to the mainstream. Mr Freck and Mr Volk say they have already had customers come back for more.

They concluded: 'Men want to wear them, and that's a fact! There are always naysayers with any new piece of fashion. 'Living in Chicago, we know that meggings are a possibility. It would be dumb of us not to take them seriously.  'Look at the way skinny jeans started out. A band probably started wearing them and everyone questioned it, and now 50per cent of people in their twenties are wearing skinny jeans.  'We see the potential in meggings, and we hope that people use them as a serious fashion piece.'
